Land Degradation and Desertification Risk across scales. Approaches and Applications for SDG 15.3.1
10 December 2026
11:00 to 12:00 CET
Webinar description
Land degradation and desertification are major environmental challenges, threatening ecosystem functioning, soil productivity, and the sustainability of land resources, particularly in vulnerable dryland regions. Monitoring these processes is essential for understanding their dynamics, identifying areas at risk, and supporting effective land management strategies. However, the diversity of assessment methodologies, indicators, and spatial scales presents significant challenges for developing consistent and harmonized monitoring approaches.
This webinar provides an opportunity to explore the different methodologies used to monitor and assess land degradation, highlighting their strengths, limitations, and applicability across spatial and temporal scales. It will also highlight how these approaches can support land degradation monitoring in the context of SDG 15.3.1.
Speaker
Fatima-Ezzahrae Imam, Agronomist and Environmental engineer and a PhD researcher in Land Degradation and Desertification at the University of Sassari, Italy. Her research focuses on monitoring and assessing land degradation and desertification risk through Earth observation, geospatial analysis, and the evaluation of existing methodologies.
